Gartner's people3 Reports that Corporate Culture is a Key Component to Driving IT Employee Productivity
BRIDGEWATER, N.J., March 24, 2004 A common characteristic of high-performing IT organizations is that they have a strong, integrated culture that supports their business, strategy and IT vision, according to a recent report published by people3, a Gartner, Inc. company.
"Many organizations believe that once they have defined their mission, vision and values, they have established an organizational culture that will work like magic," said Lily Mok, senior consultant at people3. "Their mission, vision and values, however, may represent what their 'ideal' cultural state would be, but they may not necessarily represent what their 'real' culture actually is."
According to the report "Optimizing the Business Value of IT: Driving IT Employee Productivity," organizational cultural has become one of the top factors that attracts and retains IT professionals in this difficult business environment.
"People that have a sense of belonging to an organization are more likely to assume greater responsibility and ownership for what they do, and are more willing to contribute to the success of the organization," said Mok. "There is no standard culture that fits every high-performing organization. It's what 'fits' your business strategies and goals that matters."
In the report, people3 advises businesses to implement a formal cultural assessment process to enable business leaders to gauge the gaps between the existing state and the desired state of the culture based on the organization's long-term goals and objectives. Once identified, those human capital management (HCM) initiatives should be prioritized.
The report also details other key HCM initiatives to build an engaged and productive IT workforce:
Understand and embrace the importance of talent management.
Implement a proactive talent management strategy to effectively select, develop and retain talent.
Identify and leverage the competencies and skills of its superior performers.
Effectively align strategic business goals with employees' development goals, as well as retain the long-built knowledge and cultural bases that actually define them.
Develop effective managers (leaders) who know how to identify, empower, motivate and lead individuals for superior performance.
Select and implement metrics that effectively measure and manage the most important investment - human capital.
