Gartner Dataquest Says European PC Market Grew 9.9 Percent in Third Quarter 2000
Egham, United Kingdom, November 1, 2000 - Economic uncertainty impacted the European personal computer market as shipments in the third quarter of 2000 totaled 8.1 million units, a 9.9 percent increase over the same period last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB). Many PC vendors were impacted by slower growth in the professional sector.

"The continuing devaluation of the Euro against the dollar is changing the rules of large account deals, with customers waiting for lower prices and vendors shifting their focus elsewhere in an attempt to regain margins" said Brian Gammage, industry analyst with Gartner Dataquest's Computer Systems and Peripherals program. "It would be easy to attribute this slow demand to year 2000 issues or to the slow adoption of Windows 2000, but this is not the case: the real motivation is cost."
The top three vendors in the region experienced either flat or negative growth, while both HP and IBM had growth rates larger than the industry average (see Table 1). Some of this success is due to HP and IBM's ability to buck the trend in large account business.

PC shipments in the professional segment grew 6.1 percent, while the home segment increased 21.2 percent. The professional segment accounted for 72 percent of the PC market in Europe during the third quarter, with shipments of 5.8 million units. While the home market showed strong growth, this market is still much smaller with third quarter shipments of 2.3 million units.
The professional segment in Germany and France showed negative year-on-year growth, but the professional segment in the UK grew more than 9 percent. Shipments of notebook PCs and shipments to the home segment continued to show healthy growth, so Gartner Dataquest analysts said the lockdown appears to only be affecting the large professional deskbound market.
Germany was the No. 1 country in the region with shipments of 1.6 million units, an increase of 0.4 percent over the third quarter of last year. The United Kingdom had shipments reach 1.5 million units, up 13.9 percent over the same period last year, and PC shipments in France totaled 1 million units, an increase of 9 percent. Greece showed the strongest growth in the region, with shipments of 70 thousand units, up 49.5 percent over the third quarter of 1999.
"The promised reduction of lifecycles is yet to materialize and is tied to the uptake of Windows 2000," Mr. Gammage said. "We expect to see the first wave of this starting to appear by the fourth quarter this year, followed by a pickup in replacements over 2001."
