W. Michael Cox, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, to Examine Today's "Economic Revolution"
|

San Jose, Calif., October 5, 2000 - As semiconductor technologies become even more prevalent in next-generation hardware and software platforms, the semiconductor industry will continue to experience a healthy growth rate, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB). Detailed analysis on the future of the semiconductor industry will be announced during Gartner Dataquest's Semiconductors 2000 conference, October 30-31 at the Hyatt Regency LaJolla at Aventine, in San Diego, California.

"Recent stories about Intel's earnings announcement have put a lot of misconceptions out into the market about the semiconductor industry," said Joe Grenier, vice president for Gartner Dataquest's worldwide semiconductor group. "Overall, the semiconductor industry is having a great year, and during Semiconductors 2000 we'll explore growth opportunities in the market, with an emphasis on the hot and emerging semiconductor applications."

|
W. Michael Cox, senior vice president and chief economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and author of "Myths of Rich & Poor," will be the opening day keynote speaker. Dr. Cox will show how America is going through a period of rapid technological progress that will make the world tomorrow as different from the world today as the world after electricity was different from that before it. The birth of the microprocessor in 1971 has spawned numerous "technology spillovers" to other industries - making whole new industries possible and existing ones more productive - just as electricity did at the turn of the last century.

The conference will take a unique approach to its comprehensive examination of the products, emerging technologies, applications, manufacturing and market analysis of the global semiconductor industry. Each day's three concurrent tracks will probe an important semiconductor topic from a holistic perspective, analyzing the entire issue from the specific semiconductor facets, up through the larger system market. This analysis will encompass the research of Gartner Dataquest's semiconductor analysts in collaboration with system analysts from other research areas, such as telecom, software and other hardware markets.
