| Gartner Names Robert E. Knapp to Chief Marketing Officer |

STAMFORD, CT, July 20, 2000 — Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB) today announced that Robert E. Knapp, 41, has joined the technology advisory firm as Chief Marketing Officer reporting to CEO Michael Fleisher.

Gartner has created the Chief Marketing Officer position as part of a strategic initiative to harness the power of the Gartner brand and communicate its benefits effectively via traditional marketing channels and new media. Gartner marketing vision, strategy and execution will support Gartner's corporate, research, consulting, events and Internet lines of business.

Knapp joins Gartner from SiegelGale, a prestigious branding and e-services firm based in New York where he worked since 1993. As Chief Client Officer of SiegelGale, Knapp directed all strategy and consulting services focused on helping companies reposition and strengthen their brands. Knapp has led client engagements with Industry Standard, Disney, EDS, Apple, JC Penney, and Nortel. Prior to SiegelGale, Knapp was Group Director at Lotas Minard Patton McIver leading the repositioning of Procter & Gamble's Max Factor cosmetics line. Before that, Knapp was Account Director at BBDO where he managed the Apple Computer account. Knapp also worked at Lintas as Vice President on the IBM, Lever, and LEGO accounts.
