GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says European PC Industry Surpasses 23 Percent Growth in Third Quarter
Egham, United Kingdom, November 5, 1999-The European personal computer market experienced robust growth in the third quarter of 1999, with PC shipments reaching 6.7 million units, up 23.5 percent from the third quarter of 1998, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). Compaq remained the No. 1 vendor in the region, with its market share remaining at 16 percent. Dell and Siemens posted the strongest growth among the top-tier vendors with growth rates of 49 and 41 percent, respectively (see Table 1).
Germany continued to lead the region, with shipments reaching 1.6 million units in the third quarter, an increase of 35 percent over the same period last year. The United Kingdom was the only other country to have shipments exceed 1 million units, as its shipments reached 1.3 million units, up 24.5 percent over the third quarter of last year.
"After a modest second quarter, Germany has become again the driving force in the European PC market," said Howard Seabrook, vice president and director for Dataquest's Computer Systems and Peripherals programs. "Germany experienced strong demand in the consumer segment with growth above 45 percent, and the region also posted 31 percent growth in the professional segment. Small to medium-size enterprises, driven by year 2000 concerns, were widely perceived as the main driver behind this strong performance."
